Tyler the Tiger
Spread-eagled on the floor, Tyler may look like a lazy fellow but put on some funky music and he makes the best dance partner – his fancy moves will surprise you. With his dart-shaped muzzle, pieced tail and many appliqué stripes, Tyler is a little challenging to make, but there are lots of detailed illustrations to guide you, and, while he may take a little more time, he is definitely worth it.
You will need
• Orange cotton fabric for the face, head, back, tail, legs and outer ears: 55 × 50cm (22 × 20in)
• White cotton fabric for the belly, legs, muzzle and inner ears: 40 × 45cm (16 × 18in)
• White cotton fabric for the claws: 15 × 15cm (6 × 6in)
• Black cotton fabric for the tail: 10 × 20cm (4 × 8in)
• Black felt for stripes, nose and eyes: 30 × 30cm (12 × 12in)
• Sewing thread
• Toy filling
• Embroidery thread
• Basic tool kit (see Tools & Techniques)
1 Make a copy of all the pattern pieces for Tyler the tiger (see Patterns), remembering to transfer all the pattern markings too; cut out your pattern pieces. Note that the pattern pieces are without seam allowance, so you will need to add the seam allowance after you draw the pattern on the fabric as required.
2 Working on the wrong side of your fabric, using your pattern pieces and allowing for a 1cm (3⁄8in) seam allowance, draw and cut out: from the orange cotton fabric (A), two back pieces (one reversed), two ears (one reversed), two side faces (one reversed), one upper face, one lower face, one head, one tail 1 piece, two tail 3 pieces and four legs; from the large piece of white cotton fabric (B), two ears (one reversed), four reversed legs, one belly, one muzzle 1 and one muzzle 2; from the black cotton fabric (C), two tail 2 pieces and one tail 4 piece. Draw and cut out the following from the black felt (D) without seam allowance: two eyes, one nose, eight leg stripe pieces, four stripe 1 pieces (two reversed), two stripe 2 pieces (two reversed), four stripe 3 pieces (two reversed), four stripe 4 pieces (two reversed), four stripe 5 pieces (two reversed) and two stripe 6 pieces (one reversed). (Note: the small piece of white cotton fabric will be used to make the claws in step 7.)
